| For the Truly Hard Core |
Hit the ground as soon as the train stops and head towards the quarry! Jump on the road (East side of the tracks). The road switchbacks through dense woods up to the top of the plateau, so you can ski off at the end of any of the switchbacks, but the best tracks are from the top, at just under 1000’ ft. elevation gain. From the top, you get great views over the ridge, and on a good day, of Denali. Ski south on the ridge to the next hump, then head down from there. It’ll take you at least a couple of hours to make it up top, and you’ll need to cruise to make it back in time. Once you get to the top, pick a line down the steep section, then catch the old cat track or ski down the road to return to the train. Be sure to be back by the 4:00 whistle or you’ll be spending a cold night out! |

For the Mere Mortals |
Tour historic Curry. There’s an airstrip through the first line of trees, just East of the tracks. Punch through the trees and ski or snowshoe around the strip to check out the remains of the old houses. Head north of the train along the river for a mellow and beautiful loop over rolling terrain. On the way back, head up the road to the renovated cabin. It’s worth taking off your skis to peek in to the cabin and imagine what life might have been like for an early Alaskan Curry resident. Ski back down the road to return to the train. |
