SKAN Blog
The 2012 SKAN 24 is going to be even better than last year (Is that possible, you say? YES! It’s possible, we say! Read on…). Not only do we have a whole slew of fantastic sponsors lined up, a quickly growing pile of high-quality swag to give away, and a deal with a local RV rental company for a kickin’ 2-day deal, it’s NATIONAL WAFFLE DAY in Sweden! Yes, you heard correctly, WAFFLES. As in, we’ll be making waffles during the race! Oh my, that is good. We’ll be working hard all winter to make the 2012 SKAN a raging success – the most fun you’ll ever have at a Nordic ski race. Stay tuned for all the race updates by following the race blog – www.skan24.blogspot.com.

Race Format
Everybody:
- There will be two 5 kilometer courses. Every 6 hours the course will alternate to allow for the other course to be groomed and re-set.
- Racers may finish at any time prior to the 6, 12, or 24 hour mark. Racers may finish after 24 hours, providing they DEPARTED on their final lap prior to the 6, 12, or 24 hour mark.
- This is a freestyle event, and classic skiers are welcomed. Racers may also alternate between classic and freestyle. Racers may change or re-wax skis throughout the event.
- Waxing will be available in the stadium throughout the full 24 hours.
- Participants may leave the trail at any point (for aid, breaks, restroom, etc.), provided they re-enter the course at the same place.
Teams:
- Co-ed teams must be an even split, except in the case of an undermanned team (i.e. 4 men and 3 women on an 8-person team). Undermanned teams will be bumped up to the next level of team members. (3 people = quad team and 5, 6 or 7 people = octo team)
- Relay exchanges will be made AFTER the lap count. Exchanges will be in the form of physical contact, such as a tap.
- Any member of the team may race any amount of laps. You do not need to race in any particular order, nor do all team members have to complete the same amount of laps.
- Only one person from each team may be on the course at one time. This is a RELAY format.
Required Gear
- Headlamp (for skiing laps once it’s dark out) - with the variety of headlamps available today, we will not have any sort of minimum requirement. Just be prepared to ski within the means of the headlamp you choose to use!
Recommended Gear
- Handwarmers
- Changes of dry clothes (for soloists as well as teams). If you go out with damp clothing after your body has cooled down it WILL NOT warm back up!
- Drink/food belt (even 2K is a long way when you bonk)
Aid Stations
- An aid station will be provided in the stadium at the START/FINISH area.
- Mini-aid station at 2.5km.
Restrooms and Facilities
- The restrooms in the bunker will be available.
- Rent-A-Can will be located in the stadium.
- The chalet will be available during normal operating hours.
Sleep Accomodations
- The wax bunker will be available to set up “camp.”
- Feel free to bring your camper/RV and stay in the parking lot.
