SKI TIPS - Trail Etiquette

Tips on good behavior:

  • Do not take mountain bikes, dogs or horses on groomed cross country ski trails. Use only designated multi-use trails.
  • Do not walk on groomed ski trails.
  • Horses and dog owners are responsible for picking up any dropping on the trails.
  • Avoid walking or running on diagonal xc ski tracks.
  • Move off trail to allow grooming equipment to pass.
  • Avoid skiing right after groomers have groomed trails. It takes 2-4 hours for the freshly groomed trails to set up.
  • Do not ski the wrong way on one way trails. Keep to the right on two-way trails.
  • Do not skate on diagonal (classic ski) tracks.
  • Respect the wildlife. Enjoy watching but don't hassle them.
  • If you fall, please get off the trail as soon as you can.
  • Do not xc ski on the dog mushing trails. If you find you are on a trail, go back.
  • Please let others know that you are approaching them from behind by politely calling out "trail" or "on your left".
  • If you are skiing fast and come upon slower skiers, please reduce your speed while you pass on their left - then take off again once you have passed them. Think of other skiers as yield signs.
  • Fill in sitzmarks (disturbed snow left when you fall)
  • Downhill skiers have the right-of-way.

Construction Crews on the Trails:

  • Avoid areas where machines are working
  • Restrain your animals.
  • Make eye contact with equipment operators before passing. Make sure that they see you!!!
  • Give right away to equipment working
  • We'll watch out for you, but watch out for yourself.

Trail Etiquette when Biathlon Range in Use:

  • Do not move through the paved firing area when the range is in use; instead, travel behind the double fences at the rear of this area.
  • Keep pets on leash near the range when it is in use.
  • For safety, do not climb the vegetated earthen berm nearest the building to see what is going on when the range is in use.
  • You are encouraged to stop and watch from behind the double fence line as the biathletes go through their training sessions.
