Bartlett High School opened in the fall of 1974. Tom Besh, Lin Hinderman and Sally Burkholder were Physical education teachers at the 7-12 complex. During the summer and fall of 1974 they laid out a 2km trail on military land adjacent to the school grounds. Bartlett skiers and parents as well as the teachers and friends they could drag out helped construct the trail. Some of the involved people were the Doughertys, the Bodnars, the Goodmans, Tom Besh, Lin Hinderman, Sally and Jim Burkholder and many others. (we need your name if you were there)
In 1977-78 the ski club, under president Joan Goodman, organized a Ski for Light event and raised enough money to light the Bartlett Trail. Jim Burkholder and Ron Smith, an electrician from Eagle River, oversaw the project where many volunteers launched light poles and luminares. This was the largest of the Nordic Ski Club/Nordic Ski Community lighted projects to date and the last one to use above ground wire.
This history needs updating from 1979 to the present - Pete Tryon and Tim Brabetts have been instrumental in any work done on the trail recently.
