Sprint races run differently than any other ski race.
First there is a qualifying race, similar to a time trial - individual starts, 15 seconds apart. The fastest 24 skiers in the qualifying round move on to the elimination rounds. Time is not used in the elimination rounds, just place. There were 4 quarterfinals with 6 skiers. The top two finishers from each quarter finals go on to the 2 semi-finals. The top three finishers from each semi-finals go on the "A" final that determines places 1-6. The remaining 6 skiers from the semi-finals go on to the "B" final that determines places 7-12.
On the final results the qualifying times are listed for all skiers, but are used to determine the place of places 25 and higher. The elimination rounds determine places 1-24.
