Venue Information ~ Kincaid Park

Kincaid Park is situated among 1,400 acres of rolling, forested hills and beautiful scenery…a spectacular view of Mt. Susitna across Cook Inlet; Fire Island to the Southwest; both Mt. Denali and Mt. Foraker to the North; and arguably, the best sunsets in Anchorage! Many species of wildlife roam free within the park.

Over 25 major events have been held in the park, including: national level competitions for the selection of the U.S. Olympic Teams for X-C skiing and for Special Olympics; Alaska Ski for Women, the largest women-only ski race in the country; the National Masters X-C Skiing Championships; and the NCAA National X-C Skiing Championships. The 60 km of interwoven trails, of which nearly 20 km are lighted, play host to four seasons of biking, hiking, biathlon, triathlon, walking, running, and skiing activities and competitions. The terminus of the Coastal Trail is within yards of the Outdoor Center.  This beautiful multi-use 10-mile trail begins in downtown Anchorage, and connect to the Chester Creek trail system which connects to the Hillside trail system..

The combined efforts of the Kincaid Project Group, Municipality of Anchorage and NSAA are expanding the skiing amenities at Kincaid Park.  New construction include the following elements:  new sprint loop with spectator bridge, reshaped stadium, biathlon range relocation and improvement, reconstructed access road, replaced and widened bridge over the access road, an additional lighted multi-purpose trail linking to trails along Raspberry Road outside of the park and snow making capability.

Kincaid Park has a long and fascinating history including use as a Nike Missile Base in the 1960’s. Former bunkers have been transformed in the NSAA equipment bunker, Kincaid Chalet, and the “Annex” which is being used as the athlete village for 2008 Junior Olympics.

TRAIL PASSES

All trails in the Municipality of Anchorage are free to the public.  The Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage through memberships and donations maintains the majority of ski trails in Anchorage; so that no ski passes will be required on training days.  However, on competition days only athletes and coaches with credentials will be permitted to enter the ‘Start Area’ and ski on the designated course.

There will be parking available within easy walking distance of the competition stadium for families and spectators in the lower lots.  Overflow parking will be provided in near by parking lots on race days with free shuttle service to competition area.

ATHLETE VILLAGE

Kincaid Park’s “Annex” (aka The Bunker) will be transformed during the 2008 Junior Olympics into an Athlete Village.  On competition days this facility will be available only to credentialed athletes and coaches.  Located directly adjacent to the waxing facilities, athletes and coaches may use this area to relax, socialize and store equipment.  The Athlete Village will be open the same hours as the course. On race days a concessions stand with food and coffee for sale will be available in the Chalet.
