AMH Anchorage Cup

  • A Winter Family Tradition
  • Achieve your goals of fitness this winter!
  • Kids race their first race FREE

The AMH Anchorage Cup Citizen Races are five ski events brought to you by the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage and sponsored by Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking. Skiers of all ages and abilities are welcome. The goal is to have fun, ski on well-groomed trails, test your ability, meet new friends and see old ones.

This series is similar to a running series (like the Tuesday Night series). People of all ages and abilities choose a distance, line up on the start line, and go! They wear anything from wool to long underwear to spandex. They go as fast as they want or tour and chat with friends. It’s a great way to get outside on a Sunday in winter!

Can you volunteer? We always need help. Please contact:

How it Works

  1. Register online or in person the day of the race (save money by registering online).
  2. Choose your distance for each race. Distance options can range from 5k to 30k, it just depends on the history of the race (weather depending). Some races are relay races, grab a friend and sign up together, or show up at the race and ask at the bib handouts for a partner.
  3. Grab your bib before the start (10a-11:30am), check your start time, then check the map to see the course and test it out on your warm-up. Fancy waxing isn’t necessary, but you can always check in with staff at AMH if you want to learn more about kick wax and glide wax.
  4. Jr. Nordic kids: warm up with Ready 2 Race, look for R2R coach inside near bib pick-up. Get help waxing and get excited to ski!
  5. Make your way to the stadium a bit before your start time, stay warm and listen for when your wave starts.
  6. Line up and wait for the flag to drop, then go!
  7. After your race or tour, head inside for food, cheer, and door prizes.

Race Conditions

Anchorage Cup races will not be held when weather or trail conditions pose a safety risk to participants.  When weather or trail conditions are marginal we may encourage participants to enter the shorter distance events.  There is no specific minimum air temperature that races will be held.  The determination of whether the race can be safely held will be based on multiple factors including temperature, wind, precipitation and course conditions.

The Race Director will make a final determination regarding the acceptability of racing conditions as soon as possible but no later than 10 AM the morning of the race.  A race that cannot be held due to unsafe conditions will be rescheduled and if there are no available dates it will be cancelled.  Registration fees will not be refunded.

Anchorage Cup Points

Anchorage Cup points will be awarded to everyone who finishes a race. Points are calculated by taking your race time and dividing by the average time of the top 3 finishers in your race. For the longest race course the result will be multiplied by 100. For shorter races, the result will be multiplied by the ratio of your race distance divided by the distance of the longest race. Men and women points will be calculated separately. For determining overall end-of-season Anchorage Cup winners, each person’s top 3 point values out of 4 points races will be totaled.

Points = Time/(avg top 3) x dist/max.dist x 100

Points = Anchorage Cup Race Points

ATTT = Average time of the top 3 finishers in your race

Time = Your time

Dist = Your Course distance

MaxDist = The maxiumu course distance
